Painful hand and wrist due to rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune condition in which joints become inflamed – often in the hands and feet, but also elsewhere. Pain, stiffness, swelling and fatigue can significantly limit day-to-day functioning.

Exercise is an important part of treatment in RA. Scientific research shows that long-term, person-centred and supervised exercise therapy is effective for people with RA and severe functional limitations. Our care focuses on, among other things:

  • maintaining and improving mobility: of the affected joints
  • building muscle strength and fitness: at a pace that suits what your body can handle
  • learning to live with the condition: finding a good balance between load and load capacity, including during flare-ups

Since 1 January 2025, physiotherapy for RA with severe functional limitations has been fully reimbursed under the Dutch basic health insurance, with no maximum number of treatments. The condition is that treatment is provided by a physiotherapist or exercise therapist trained for this purpose. At Fysiotherapie Kijkduin this treatment is provided by Jana Hussain, who has completed the KNGF training programme in rheumatoid arthritis with severe functional limitations and is qualified to offer this therapy. The indication is established during your first appointment.
