Intermittent claudication, sometimes called “window shopper’s leg”, is caused by narrowing of the leg arteries. As a result the leg muscles receive too little oxygen while walking, leading to pain or cramp in the legs that forces you to stop. After a short rest the pain subsides and you can walk on.
Supervised exercise therapy under the guidance of a physiotherapist is the first-choice treatment for intermittent claudication. The training focuses on:
- increasing your pain-free walking distance
- improving your walking technique and fitness
- lifestyle advice: such as being more active and support with stopping smoking
Treatment usually takes place on referral from your GP or vascular surgeon. Please feel free to get in touch for more information.
